Greetings from hurricane-ravaged, ICORE-Florida – aka Jan and Lynda — with profound apologies to the legendary songwriter Kris Kristofferson and the late, great country singer Johnny Cash, for all of you who remember “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down.”
We had a long time without electric, running water, TV or internet – Sunday afternoon around 3:15 PM through Thursday at precisely 12: 18 PM — to pen this parody. Truthfully, it was far, far too long.
“Well, we woke up Monday mornin’ in the wake of Irma’s wrath, which really hurt,
And we couldn’t have our breakfast, ‘cause our generator just refused to work.
So we fumbled in our closets, tried to find our best and cleanest old work shirts,
And we stumbled to the yard to find a safer, better way to face the day.
“Our minds were smote the day before with wind and rain and floods the storm was kickin.’
And the neighbors brought a chainsaw and some friends, thank God for them, Trish, Mary, Glen.
Somewhere far away we heard the hopeful sounds of someone fryin’ chicken,
But we knew our ‘Paradise’ was somewhere lost in Irma’s path along the way.
“On a quiet Monday mornin’…we wished for ‘lectric, net and phone,
‘Cause there’s somethin’ in a Monday…that makes you pray things come back on.
And there’s nothin’ short of cryin’…that’s as lonesome as the sound,
Of a quiet Monday mornin’…with Hur’cane Irma, leavin’ town.
“Cross the street we saw a daddy with a laughin’ little girl that he was swingin’,
And we checked for messages and texts and emails but our phones they were not ringin’,
So we called for help but no one cared a tinker’s damn that we were slowly sinkin’,
And we called and called but no one answered promptly or too friendly, anyway.
“On a quiet Monday mornin’…we wished for ‘lectric, gas and phone.
‘Cause there’s somethin’ in a Monday… that makes you pray things come back on.
And there’s nothin’ short of cryin’…that’s as lonesome as the sound,
Of a quiet Monday mornin’…with Hur’cane Irma leavin’ town.
“Of a quiet Monday mornin’…where no internet is found.
Of a quiet Monday mornin’… the dogs have finally settled down.
Of a quiet Monday mornin’…but the water’s almost gone.
But a joyous Monday mornin’…Thank You God, we’re still around!”
